Eyelash extensions is our art form here at Laid and Lashed, and we know it can be a big decision to get your lashes done for the first time!
You may have a lot of questions to get familiar with the concept, options, and effects of getting lash extensions, so we’ve put together a guide with everything you’ll need to know.
How Many Types Of Lash Extensions Are There?
There are several different types of eyelash extensions, which means you’ll be able to customize your look and pick the right style for you.
The most common techniques are:
- Classic
- Hybrid
- Volume
- Mega-Volume
It’s important to ensure that your lash artist is well-trained in eyelash extension techniques, and that they’re using high-quality materials. These factors will play a big role in the final look.
Do Eyelash Extensions Ruin Your Eyelashes?
Eyelash extensions themselves will not damage or cause any harm to your natural lashes.
However… improper technique and/or care definitely will.
Improper application and low-quality products can affect your natural lashes and damage them in the long run. That’s why it’s important to evaluate your options and select a lash artist that has experience and good reviews.
This process is taking place very close to your eyes, so being selective is for the best! If you notice an unusually low price and quick application time, that could be a warning sign that damaging or low-quality materials are being used– don’t be afraid to ask or check reviews carefully.
How Do I Prepare For My First Eyelash Extensions?
Before going to your first eyelash extensions appointment, you can:
- Review your options and consider what style of lash you are looking for
- Be sure to let your lash artist know of any allergies or sensitivities
- Be sure to remove your makeup
- Be sure to remove your contacts
- Get comfy for your appointment and be ready to close your eyes for a while
If you feel nervous about your appointment, don’t hesitate to let your lash artist know! They will be able to communicate with you and ensure a great experience.
How Long Does An Eyelash Extensions Appointment Take?
Full Set eyelash extension appointments can take between 1.5-2.5 hours. Refills can take between 1-1.5 hours. The exact timing depends on the type of technique you’ve selected, as well how long it’s been since your last appointment.
You can check out our exact booking times here for each type of appointment.
How Long Do Eyelash Extensions Last For?
Eyelash extensions last for 2-4 weeks. After 4 weeks, the majority of the natural lashes with extensions applied have shed. Most people choose to get their eyelash extensions refilled every 1-3 weeks.
The retention period of your lashes will depend heavily on the quality and skill provided by your lash artist as well as proper aftercare on the client’s behalf. Going with a skilled artist and following the aftercare instructions will pay off and typically offer better retention.
Can You Get Eyelash Extensions Wet?
You should avoid getting eyelash extensions wet within 24 hours after your appointment to allow the glue to set completely.
Afterwards, your lashes are waterproof! You can get eyelash extensions wet, but we recommend being careful and gentle with them.
Can You Swim With Eyelash Extensions?
Yes, you can even swim with eyelash extensions. A dip in the pool or a day at the beach won’t ruin your lashes as long as you avoid excessive pressure—like rubbing your eyes or rough waves.
Just make sure to cleanse with a lash shampoo and dry off your lashes immediately after swimming to remove the chlorine or saltwater, then gently brush to keep them in the best shape.
What To Expect When Getting Eyelash Extensions?
The process of getting your eyelashes done is simple, but can take some getting used to. Here’s what you can expect to happen during your appointment:
Step 1: Consultation
If it’s your first time, your lash artist will take the time to consult with you about your preferences, take a look at your eye shape, and go through an intake form. At this point, you can discuss your preferred look and lash technique.
Step 2: Cleansing & Preparation
You should always arrive at your lash appointment makeup-free, with a clean face. This will make the process smoother. Your lash artist will begin by cleansing and preparing your eyes, by placing a light tape on your lower lash line. This will ensure that your lower lashes don’t get glued together, and nothing gets into your eyes.
Step 3: Application
At this stage, you can completely relax! Your eyes will be closed for the rest of the process, and you can feel free to take a little nap. During your beauty sleep, your lash artist will be meticulously gluing eyelash extensions to each of your natural lashes.
Step 4: Drying
Once the application is complete, your lash artist will ensure that the glue is dried and your eyelashes are perfectly placed before opening your eyes.
Step 5: Removing Tape
Next, the gel pads will be removed from your bottom lashes. Don’t worry, it doesn’t hurt! The pads will slide right off and your lash artist will carefully check that nothing is stuck.
Step 6: The Final Look
At the end, you can take a look in the mirror and make sure that you’re happy with your results! You’re all set and ready to go.
