Types of Eyelash Extensions: How to Choose?

Choosing the right type of eyelash extension can dramatically transform your look, and I’m sure you've seen before-and-after photos to prove it! Luckily, extensions are fully customizable, and there’s a wide variety of looks you can achieve. But with so many options available, it can be challenging to pick one that’s right for you.

In this guide, we’ll discuss four different types of lash extensions to help you decide what to get at your next eyelash appointment.

What You Should Know About Lash Extension Types

Lash extensions differ primarily by the number of lash fibres applied to each natural eyelash, ranging from a single lash (Classic) to multiple lashes in a fan shape (Volume and Mega Volume).

This density also determines the thickness of the lash fibres to be attached, with denser lash types requiring thinner fibres. Since everyone’s lashes are different to begin with, your lash artist will adjust the exact amount needed to achieve your desired look while ensuring your comfort.

4 Types of Eyelash Extensions

Classic Lash Extensions

The classic eyelash extension involves attaching one extension to each natural eyelash at a ratio of 1:1. This option is ideal for those who want to enhance their everyday look without the appearance of heavy makeup.

Volume Eyelash Extensions

Volume eyelash extensions take your lashes to the next level by adding multiple extensions to a single natural lash. This kind of extension takes longer to finish—your artist will meticulously attach 2 to 6 lashes, arranged in a fan, to the base of each eyelash. This results in a fuller, darker appearance and noticeably adds density and thickness to your lash line. For individuals with a sparse natural lash line (less lashes overall, or thinner eyelashes), volume extensions are a great choice.

Hybrid Eyelash Extensions

Hybrid extensions are created by mixing 50% classic and 50% volume lash fans. The reasoning behind this style is usually to create a textured look. We recommend discussing the hybrid look with your lash artist to see if it’s a good fit for your eyes and desired look.

Mega Volume Eyelash Extensions

If volume lashes are not enough for you, then consider Mega Volume extensions for an impressive and ultra-dramatic look! These are another great option for individuals with sparse or thin natural lashes, because it offers full coverage, which classic extensions may not.

To get this result, up to 16 lashes are added to each natural eyelash for maximum volume and definition. This type of lash extension is best for those who want glamorous and eye-catching lashes that stand out.

Eyelash Extension Styles

One of the best things about getting eyelash extensions is the ability to customize them to suit your unique style. In addition to picking a lash type, you can also ask your lash artist about popular lash styles that would work for your eyes. Here are some ideas:

How Do I Choose the Right Lash Extension?

Each lash extension technique has its own unique look, and there is no “best” one. At the end of the day, it’s all about which extensions you’ll feel good in and provide your desired look.

You can use the below as a general rule of thumb:

  • Want a natural look? Go for Classic.
  • Looking for added texture? Try Hybrid.
  • Want a noticeable difference? Choose Volume.
  • Ready to turn up the drama? Opt for Mega Volume.
  • Have thin or sparse natural lashes? Volume or Mega Volume are for you.

Remember, you can always ask a lash expert! Your lash artist can help you find the look that fits you best. Don’t be afraid to ask questions during the consultation portion of your appointment.
